Home Organic’s Story
The Beech Grove on a side of a mountain in West Virginia, where my Granddad Dewey Thompson bought a farm in 1930, could not be saved. The mineral rights to the land were sold at the turn of the century to oil and gas companies. They had the right to drill on any part of the land, and drill they did, right where the ancient trees were. So, the Beech Grove, majestic and old, shared a journey with ancient American oak, hickory, cherry and walnut, all popular with furniture makers in Europe, the latter already depleted of its own forests.
My first organic lessons took place in the woods and fields near my grandparents’ farm, my guide picking plants with medicinal properties, pointing out different species of both plants and animals, showing me how to live in and with Nature, without harming it. A sense of deep appreciation of our home planet imparted to me then was a true beginning of HomeOrganic.

I studied biology, forestry and business. Ironically, after not being able to survive on a park ranger pay, I took a surveying job with an oil company, hiking miles along streams and mountain ridges, delineating wetlands, and identifying protected forests. Thanks to new conservation laws, times were getting kinder to Earth. This eventually led me to my environmental consulting business. My job allows me to protect wetlands and trees, just like the beech trees my Granddad could not save. All of my adult life, I sought to follow the organic lessons of my childhood through conscious selection of natural products. Preservation of the organic lifestyle I first learned from Dewey Thompson, is the mission of HomeOrganic.
